A question for classic literature and english enthusiast's?

I love to read classic literature books by authors like J.D. saligner and John Steinbeck. The main thing that attracts me to these author's are their use of symbolism but i have a hard time trying to figure out the deeper meaning of things therefore i am wondering how can i improve my comprehension of books that are harder to understand.
