How can I get better at understanding symbolism and metaphors in books?

A majority of the time when I read metaphorical analysis and symbolism analysis in books, I realize that most of it goes over my head. I don't think I'm stupid by any means, but I just can't really seem to pick up on the kind of thing. I feel like I can't see past what's at the surface. Any ideas/suggestions?
