Why do silver bullets effect werewolves and what else weakens them?

I know vampires can't stand crosses, sunlight, and holy water in legends due to the symbolism of them being damned to hell. But why do silver bullets effect werewolves? Are there any specific reasons, myths, or beliefs that caused this? And are there any other weaknesses that werewolves as a whole share?
